England registered a comfortable 36-run win over Bangladesh to get their Women’s World T20 campaign off to a good start here on Thursday.

In front of a sparse crowd which barely touched three digits, Charlotte Edwards played a captain’s knock of a 51-ball 60 to put England in a commanding position with 153/7 on the board even as her Bangla counterpart Jahanara Alam returned figures of 3/32.

In return, Bangladesh could only put up 117/6 in their allotted overs.

Opting to bat, openers Edwards and Tammy Beaumont attacked from the get go with the former driving Nahida Akter and Lata Mondal through midwicket to the fence. The latter took the more explosive route sending Nahida’s over-pitched delivery down the track and lofting Salma Khatun over long on for a six before being bowled by Alam. Edwards continued to pick her shots to keep the run rate ticking as Sarah Taylor (9) and Heather Knight (1) were sent back before embarking on a 47-run partnership with Natalie Sciver (27).

Scores: England Women 153/7 in 20 overs (C. Edwards 60, N. Sciver 27, Jahanara Alam 3/32) bt Bangladesh Women 117/6 in 20 overs (Nigar Sultana 35, Salma Khatun 32 n.o, Anya Shrubsole 2/27)
