2 of 7 JNU tapes sent to lab found to be fake

Two of the seven tapes related to the Jawaharlal Nehru University, which were sent by the AAP government for forensic examination to a laboratory in Bengaluru, have reportedly found to be fake.

The tapes had been sent for examination to ascertain whether students of the varsity had allegedly raised anti-India slogans during the controversial campus event on February 9.

The Delhi police has already arrested JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and two students Umer Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya on charges of sedition for allegedly raising “anti-national” slogans on the campus.

The three JNU students have outrightly denied having raised any anti-India slogans. They told the police that some outsiders, with their faces covered, had allegedly indulged in “anti-national” sloganeering.

Even chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had accused the Modi government at the Centre of targeting students and not arresting the “real culprits” as it wanted to forge an electoral alliance with the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mr Kejriwal had gone to the extent of asking what type of government the BJP was running at the Centre as it was unable to track just four students. “How can they arrest those involved in the Pathankot airbase attack ” he had added.

The AAP government, which had been opposing the police tooth and nail in courts over its opposition to the bail plea of Mr Kumar, had also set up a magisterial inquiry to look into the entire JNU controversy. “Once the inquiry is complete, then only we will move the court,” a bureaucrat said. “We first want to go find out each and every detail about the February 9 incident.”

“Once things are crystal clear, then only we will approach judiciary. It is for our courts to take a final call on the matter.”

The AAP government had sent seven tapes related to the JNU controversy for examination to the Truth Laboratory in Bengaluru.

“The lab report says two tapes are fake ones. The remaining ones are okay,” the city bureaucrat added.
