The Delhi police on Wednesday arrested two men, including a former employee of the Delhi Metro, for the robbery of Rs 12 lakh from the station control room of the Rajendra Place Metro station on Monday morning.

The accused, identified as Pawan Kumar (21) and Sonu Kumar (22), are residents of Vijay Nagar near Kaushambi in Ghaziabad. Pawan is a native of Bulandshahr and Sonu belongs to Amroha district in Uttar Pradesh.

Pawan was employed as a token counter operator at the Rajendra Place Metro station but had been removed from service over misbehaviour with station controller Kunal Kishore.

Mr Kishore was stabbed by the two accused during the 20-minute robbery and was admitted to a hospital.

“The accused claimed that he had known security lapses at Metro station, therefore he hid a three-inch knife in his socks and entered inside the station premises after a security check,” said a senior police officer. “Pawan was aware of the topography of the Rajendra Place Metro station that helped him to commit crime and slip out without getting caught by security personnel. He executed robbery on Monday because he was aware of movement of heavy cash on every Monday,” joint commissioner of police (New Delhi) M.K. Meena said.

The duo left the station premises at around 5.34 am with the knife and hired an autorickshaw till Connaught Place from where they took another autorickshaw to Anand Vihar and later left for Ghaziabad.

During the investigation, it was found that while entering the Metro station, both of the robbers had used a Metro card.

When the movement of one of the cards was tracked, it was found to be used at Kaushambi Metro station on April 9.

The CCTV footage of the Kaushambi Metro station was examined, and the police found it was used by Pawan Kumar, a former DMRC employee. The DMRC verification form of Pawan Kumar was obtained and all his contacts, address, friends and relatives were traced for further interrogation. The police raided the address mentioned in the verification form, but it was found to be incorrect. After this, a police team went to his native village and apprehended him with his friend Sonu Kumar.

“During interrogation, he confessed to committing the robbery. The police recovered Rs 10.55 lakh in cash and a mobile phone from their possession,” the police said.

Pawan, a business administration graduate, was sacked in December 2015 after he had a fight with Mr Kishore, the station controller.

Besides this, his sister got married in 2014 and his father was under heavy debt due to the wedding.
