The Delhi traffic police data has revealed that 25 unruly drivers are fined each hour for dangerous driving. The data says that 78 offenders were prosecuted every hour for travelling without helmets. The data also says that around 395 errant drivers were prosecuted each hour for traffic offence. As many as 23,14,755 challans have been imposed on traffic offenders till August.

According to a traffic police data, each hour 4 unruly drivers are prosecuted for drunken driving; 13 for red light jump; 8 for triple riding; 11 for over speeding; 4 for without driving license; 22 for stop line crossing; 8 for without head/tail light; and 4 are prosecuted for tinted glass offence.

In a bid to deter the traffic offenders, the city police has deployed more policemen at the city’s main points to deal with the violation of traffic rules such as disobeying the zebra crossing, jumping the traffic signals, etc. “The commuters, who often disobey the traffic rules, will have a limited scope to escape,” said a senior traffic police official.

“Traffic police data revealed that 20,809 for drunken driving; 74234 for red light jump; 457884 without helmet; 46781 for triple riding; 65,661 for over speeding; 1,47,966 for dangerous driving; 3993 for using mobile phone; 22,445 without driving license; 1,29,921 for stop line crossing; 49,468 without head/tail light (commercial vehicles); and 22,562 for tinted glass were prosecuted for violating the traffic norms till August,” the official added.

To tighten the noose around these offenders, traffic police conducted a special drive against drunken driving from June onwards for the late evening hours (9 pm -12 am) outside important markets/ hotels/ restaurant areas. In this drive, around 11,200 drunken drivers have been challaned with their licences/vehicles seized. The locations where this drive started are Cannaught Place, Hauz Khas, INA Market, Saket Malls, Vasant Kunj Malls, D.D. Club, K.N. Katju Marg, Netaji Subhash Palace, Rajouri Garden Malls, District Centre, Janak Puri, Crown Plaza, Noida Road, Cross River Mall near Karkardooma, and M2K Complex.
