In a heartening news for girls seeking admission to Delhi University’s Non-Collegiate Women Education Board (NCWEB), the board has increased its centres from 13 to 25 with an addition of 5,700 more seats for the upcoming academic session.
“The university has given approval to increase both the seats and the college centres for NCWEB for the current academic session. While nearly 5,700 seats have been increased for BA and B.Com, 12 new centres have been added to NCWEB’s existing 13 centres. So far, there were 6,084 seats, which will now be increased to 11,784,” said NCWEB director Anju Gupta.
The board, which began functioning in September 1944, enables thousands of young women who cannot join regular college for various reasons to attend classes during Saturdays and Sundays. Only women students residing in the national capital territory can enrol themselves as students.
Each centre has approximately 284 seats for BA and 184 seats for B.Com. However, the new centres will have the same number of seats for both BA and B.Com.
“NCWEB is a very good system because classes are being held only on Sundays in all the centres. This way the girls are given an academic week break in order to pursue any other skill courses,” Dr Anju added.
However, the university which grants degree to a regular college student, offers the same degree to a NCWEB student.
At present, NCWEB centres are in Hansraj College, Laxmi Bai College , Kalindi College , SPM College , Jesus and Mary College , Maitreyi College , Maharaja Agrasen College , Janki Dev College , Mata Sundari College, Bharati College , Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce , PGDAV College and Vivekananda College.
The 12 added centres are Aditi College , Aryabhata College , BR Ambedkar College, Bhagini Nivedita College , College of Vocational Studies, Keshav Mahavidyalaya , Miranda House , Motilal Nehru College, Rajdhani College , Ramanujan College , Satyawati College and Aurobindo College.
About 58,583 applications were received by DU for admission to the board following which the officials thought that 6,000 seats would have been too less for such a large number of applicants. But now with the addition of more seats, there will be more opportunities for admissions following which it is even expected that there might be a dip in the cut-off too.
