The Delhi police personnel have something to cheer about: They will soon start getting birthday greetings.

Delhi police commissioner Alok Kumar Verma, who took over in March, has instructed information technology cell of the Delhi police to explore the possibility of sending birthday greetings to all Delhi police personnel on their birthdays. The force has around 83,000 personnel and the majority of them are constables.

“It will be a great move to connect with personnel. Such initiatives will definitely motivate juniors in the department and it will improve work environment,” said a senior police officer.

“We are working on the project to send birthday wishes via SMSes to all the police personnel on their birthdays. We will send SMSes to all police personnel — from constables to senior officials. The project will be worked out soon after the database of all its personnel gets updated with their mobile numbers and birthday dates,” said a police officer.

“A small action like wishing our colleague on his or her birthday goes a long way in motivating them and making them realise that everyone is important,” the officer said.

Police officers say it will be a way to de-stress the police personnel who work long hours, at times exceeding 16-18 hours.

In the first week of March, the Delhi police decided to grant all police personnel leave on their children’s birthdays and their own marriage anniversary. The order was implemented for all personnel between the ranks of inspector and constable.

“Our goal is to make every police employee feel their force cares for them. A less stressed police personnel will perform better. Most of the times, the police personnel work long hours, at times exceeding their working hours of eight hours. They stay away from their families and skip family functions,” said another senior police officer.
