Commuters have been left with no option but to park their vehicles in public spaces after the Delhi police closed the DDA parking outside Sector 12 of the Dwarka Metro station for several days due to rise in number of car thefts in the area.
This parking serves thousands of Metro commuters daily. It was a free parking provided by the DDA, but has been closed for the last 10-15 days. “The parking had no one to take care of it. Even a hoarding put up by the DDA at the site had been demolished by some unscrupulous elements,” said Rohit Sharma, a daily commuter who was forced to park his vehicle opposite the Metro station at his own risk. “The Delhi police has barricaded all the entry and exit points to the parking and is seemingly aiding illegal occupation of the site by street vendors,” he added.
“Over the past few days, the Delhi police has barricaded the entry and exit points of the parking premises. The parking has been closed without any prior information. The site is seemingly under attack of anti-social elements. Commuters using Sector 12 Metro station are finding it very difficult to park their vehicles in the vicinity,” said Sandeep Kaul, a daily commuter.
The Delhi police said it had to close this parking due to increasing number of car thefts. “There is no parking attendant in the parking which led thefts. We asked the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to look into this matter, but we have not received any reply from their side and that forced us to close this parking,” said a police official.
