The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) not only managed to retained the world’s number one position for the second consecutive year in 25-40 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) category, but also has a significant impact on socio-economic development. Since 2006, when IGIA’s management taken over by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), it has been contributed by creating 15,78,000 jobs. At present, around 35,000 persons are employed at the IGIA for various works.

According to sources, IGIA, which is celebrating its ten years, Delhi Airport construction activities contributed 6,14,000 direct and indirect jobs every year during the three-year construction phase. “The impact of IGIA on socio-economic development contributed in creating 15,78,000 jobs and helped in 0.34 per cent in the national employment rate, while the Delhi’s share in total employment stood at 25.90 per cent. In addition, employment benefits, especially from tourism & investments, shared with other regions and states,” he said.

As per conservative estimate, apart from 35,000 persons at IGIA, over 25,000 people are employed at Aerocity near the airport, which has emerged as a preferred hospitality and commercial hub. In the first phase of development as a Hospitality District, with presence of hotels and corporate offices, approximately 2,800 hotel rooms are already operational at Aerocity. Another 2,000 hotel rooms presently under construction and scheduled to be made operational in a phased manner, which will also boost employment creation. Projecting IGIA’s economic impact by 2020, he said, “Economic impact of IGIA is estimated to be Rs 29,470 crore during 2009-2010, with 0.45 per cent contribution to the national GDP and 13.53 per cent to the Delhi GSDP. It is expected to be around Rs 90,950 crore, a contribution of 22.02 per cent growth to Delhi’s GSDP, while it would be 0.7 per cent to the national GDP.” “Our efforts towards providing a seamless passenger experience has ensured that Delhi Airport’s ranking has improved from being amongst the worst airports globally in 2007, to being ranked the World’s number one airport,” said DIAL CEO I. Prabhakara Rao.
