LED boards to warn drivers of bottlenecks

The Delhi traffic police will complete the installation work of 50 variable message signs (VMS) boards by the end of this year. These boards will be installed at various intersections of the national capital. These VMS boards will alert drivers about traffic bottlenecks and help commuters take appropriate diversions. VMS is one of the quickest methods to notify a road user about real-time changes in traffic patterns and road conditions.

“The installation process of these 50 VMS boards will start from this month onwards and it will take around 3 months to complete this project. These locations are basically covering Ring Road, NH-8 (towards Gurgaon), NH-1 (towards Faridabad) and NH-24 (towards Ghaziabad). This system will save around 60 per cent time of motorists during traffic jams as the boards will be directly connected to the central command room,” said a senior traffic police official.

“Six-lane divided carriage way will have VMS boards with a length of 3 metres, height of 1.5 metres, and 0.2 metres depth. For 8-lane divided carriage way, the VMS board will have a length of 5 metres, 2 metres height, and 0.2 metres depth so that drivers can notice them easily. These digital LED signboards will show complete traffic messages,” said the official.

The boards will be inst-alled at 50 intersections su-ch as Y-Junction of Purana Qila Road and T-Junction with Bhairon Marg near the petrol pump, opposite of DPS Mathura Road, AIIMS flyover, Dhaula Kuan flyover, Mayapuri flyover, Maharani Bagh, and Azadpur etc.

“The boards will alert the commuters whenever there are jams due to accidents, congestion, or waterlogging. The boards installed at least 200 metres ahead of the site will pass the information to the commuters so that they can take an alternative route to save time. This will reduce the length of traffic tail,” said the official.
