A 23-year-old collection agent, hired by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, allegedly absconded with around Rs 50 lakh in cash that he had collected from seven Metro stations across the capital on Tuesday.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Neeraj Kumar, worked with a private cash management agency. He collected cash from the Central Secretariat, Jor Bagh, Race Course, INA and Udyog Bhavan stations.

According to a senior police officer, “The cash management company, SIS, filed a complaint that Neeraj, who had been working with them for past two years, was assigned to collect cash from the Metro stations and deposit it in a PNB branch. However, the banks were closed for three days, so he had collected the sum of around Rs 50 lakh. He boarded the Metro from Udyog Bhavan and was supposed to meet the bank officials at the AIIMS Metro station. After waiting for more than an hour, the bank officials informed SIS that Neeraj had not met them. The firm tried calling him, but his phone was switched off.”

The police said Neeraj, a native of Bihar, lived on rent at Mahipalpur. Several teams have been formed and one team has been sent to Neeraj’s Bihar home.

According to the police, a case under sections pertaining to theft and breach of trust of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Rajouri Garden Metro station.

Sources said a team was sent to his hometown in Bihar, but he had not been found as yet. The police said it has all his details and added he will be arrested soon.
