Najeeb Ahmed was asked to leave hostel October 15

While the Delhi police seems to be clueless about the whereabouts of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, who has reportedly gone missing since October 15, reports suggest that on the very same day, the warden and the students of the Mahi-Mandavi hostel had decided at a meeting that he should be expelled from the hostel with immediate effect.

The meeting between the hostel students and warden was held at 12 am following reports that Najeeb, residing in room 106, had slapped Vikrant Kumar, a resident of room 213. The incident is said to have taken place when Vikrant, who was contesting for the mess secretary’s post, had gone to Najeeb’s room.

A copy of the minutes of the meeting signed by the warden and students said that Najeeb, without any provocation, had slapped Vikrant in front of two witnesses — Ankit Kumar from room 214 and Sunil Pratap from room 122.

It said that Najeeb had reportedly admitted to have slapped Vikrant in front of hostel warden Sushil Kumar, mess warden Arun Kumar, JNUSU president Mohit Pandey, hostel president Alimuddin, his room partner Qasim, and former hostel president Dileep. All of these people had signed the statement of the emergency meeting and a copy of the same was also provided to Najeeb and Vikrant.

The minutes read: “On the basis of the written complaint given by Vikrant Kumar and eyewitness accounts and the acceptance of guilt by Najeeb, he stands accused of physical violence.” It was in the presence of the JNUSU president that the warden committee and others had taken an impromptu decision to expel Najeeb from the hostel with immediate effect. “Official communication for vacating the hostel premises will be provided to Ahmad in due course. Ahmad is required to vacate the hostel on or before October 21.”

The copy of the minutes shows that Najeeb had accepted that he had slapped the people who came to his room without any provocation. Two of those assaulted by Najeeb were dalits. The hostel warden is said to have prevented the authorities from using the Prevention of Atrocities Against SC/ST Act. But after admitting his fault, Najeeb had reportedly agreed to leave the hostel within a week.

It is learnt that Najeeb’s roommate Qasim, who himself is one of the signatories to the meeting, had requested to get his room changed. Irked by the warden’s stand and the fact that Najeeb had to accept his mistake, a source said that some students had started putting pressure on the hostel president, Alimuddin, to get the earlier resolution changed. When the hostel president refused to do so, a section of the students started whipping up communal sentiments.

Meanwhile, ABVP activist Saurabh Sharma has alleged that Najeeb Ahmed is hiding in the campus itself.
