Phase 1 gains pace as Aerocity on beautification drive

Aerocity, situated within the IGI Airport, has emerged as a preferred hospitality and commercial hub. Aerocity’s proximity to the international airport is a favourable factor for corporate houses to locate their offices here. It also enjoys seamless connectivity with South Delhi, Dwarka, Gurgaon, and Dhaula Kaun through roadways and an operational Metro station. Quality hotel developments, as a part of Aerocity’s hospitality district, also allow corporate players to effectively run their operations by providing convenient accommodation to international clients.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which runs the airport and the commercial hub, has commissioned Kuiper Compagnons for the beautification of the common areas of the new, emerging hospitality district of IGI Airport.
After a period of concept development, the proposals are now in the detail design stages. The first phase of construction has already begun and will see an underground pedestrian connection transformed into a lush oasis of indoor planting with cascading water walls, striking sculptural features and light effects.
The ongoing beautification work will make it more attractive for the airport commuters. It is likely to get an eye-catching design based on the eye of a peacock feather. Central to this area is a large water feature, 30 meters in diameter that will include a podium for a spectacular giant sculpture. In the evening the fountains will become an exciting illuminated, dancing water show.
An infinity edge detail will allow water to cascade between the upper and lower water pools. The water feature is ringed by a vibrant display of low height, colourful planting, and surrounding this is a pedestrian walkway.
“The ‘Pedestrian Plaza’ at the core of the hospitality district will become an intimate, semi-indoor garden — a rainforest garden. Located beneath a road bridge, the columns of the bridge will be clad in sculptural trellises that will become hanging gardens. The outer walls of the rainforest garden will be treated with full height, floor-to-ceiling cascading water walls that will bring light and movement to the shady space in a spectacular feature. Shade and water will combine to create a very pleasant environment to escape the hottest temperatures of the Delhi summer. Cafés, kiosks and connections to and from adjacent commercial and leisure areas will ensure that this rainforest garden quickly becomes a thriving, vibrant hub for pedestrian activities,” said a DIAL spokesperson.
