In a move to streamline its manpower, Delhi police commissioner Alok Kumar Verma has formed a five-member committee to carry out analysis of number of cases registered and manpower deployed in 162 police stations across the city. Once the manpower analysis is over, police personnel would be redeployed as per the need and requirements of each department and police station.
The committee is headed by special commissioner of police S.B.K. Singh with joint commissioners of police David Lalrinsanga and Dependra Pathak as its members and deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) Rajiv Ranjan as its convenor.
Sources said that the committee has been asked to submit its report to the police commissioner by October 7 for direct necessary approval. “The committee will inform about the final outcome to the PHQ (X Branch) so that it could be incorporated in the reply for onward transmission to the intelligence bureau,” an order issued to this effect said. “The committee will also ensure that registration of FIRs is not be denied and the resultant increase in crime rate be used as a criteria for opening up of new police stations, and better training and deployment of additional forces.”
It is learnt that after three years of hard work, special commissioner of police Sanjay Beniwal had in 2014 prepared a 222-page report titled “Manpower Assessment of Delhi Police” after doing a careful analysis of all the capital’s 162 police stations. The report was later put up before the Union home ministry. The report suggested there was an acute manpower shortage in Delhi police.
It said that the biggest drawback to effective law enforcement was because a large number of policemen were engaged in “unaccounted jobs”, like VVIP movement, checking overflowing sewage, servant verification, attending petty civil complaints and providing security to schools and local functions (from flower shows to charity sports meets).
