Often, a glass of wine is just what the doctored ordered. But beer Not so much. A specific type of craft beer made with ingredients from kefir — a fermented milk that resembles yogurt — might change that. Although it doesn’t sound like the most appetising drink, it has multiple health benefits, a study has found. According to researchers in Brazil, it reduces inflammation and stomach ulcers. It is however a preliminary study, so it’s too early to introduce it as a magic potion for your body.

So how is it made To make kefir beer, the researchers added kefir grains — white or yellowish gelatinous clumps containing bacteria and yeast — to barley malt. These grains ferment the malt and lead to a very conducive combination.

From what has been found so far, researchers are hopeful that kefir beer may have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and wound-healing properties. That’s one more reason to say cheers.
