Taapsee, Diljit were unaware of Sandeep's story
Soorma tells the story of Singh, a professional hockey player and former captain of the Indian national hockey team.
It’s the season of biopics! The one we are talking about here is Taapsee Pannu and Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming film Soorma based on Indian hockey captain Sandeep Singh. Though the lead actors are proud to be part of this film, they are embarrassed by the fact that they didn’t know much about Sandeep.
“For me, the biggest thrill was when I got an opportunity to do a sports film. I utilised it completely. The embarrassment was, being a sports enthusiast, I didn’t know Sandeep Singh’s story,” says Taapsee.
Soorma tells the story of Singh, a professional hockey player and former captain of the Indian national hockey team. Singh was seriously injured after being hit by an accidental gunshot in a train in 2006, but he did not give up and continued playing.
Singer and actor Diljit too is amazed at the player’s will. “I knew that he was the captain but didn’t know he was shot in the back. What else I didn’t know was, how a man who had been shot, stood up, recovered and made a world record. It is shameful that we didn’t know all this,” says the Punjabi actor.
And with this film, the actors attempt to rectify this mistake and let the world know about Sandeep. “There was a guilt that why weren’t we aware. It is just probably a way to rectify it. Let us be the medium to present his story. I hope now no one else says the same after the film,” says Taapsee.
Directed by Shaad Ali, Soorma is scheduled to release on 13 July.
Taapsee, who is working with Diljit for the first time, says, “I am not a trained actor and not even as experienced as him. But it feels really nice to share screen space with people who are good actors. It helps me perform well.”
