Rani Lakshmibai reacts to Rani Mukerji
The Hitchki actor's controversial statements ignited a debate among other panalist including Deepika and Alia.
A few days ago, on a television show Rani Mukerji’s statement on the #MeToo movement sparked off a controversy immediately when her co-panelists on the round table which included Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt did not approve of what she said.
Rani had mentioned, “I think as a woman you have to be that powerful within yourself, you have to believe that you’re so powerful that if you ever come into a situation like that you have the courage to say ‘back off.’ I think you have to have the courage to be able to protect yourself. You have to take responsibility for your own self.”
Deepika immediately disagreed, "I don't think everyone is constructed with that sort of DNA,” she mentioned adding that why to even bring it to the point where girls should learn self-defence. Anushka Sharma who was also on that panel agreed to Deepika's point, however, Rani who disagreed, "You can’t tell mothers how to bring up their children."
Rani was criticised on social media as well.
Kangana Ranaut who returned to the city after her New Year holiday said this at the airport on Wednesday, “Women should be supported. Women should be empowered. There are women like Rani Lakshmibai whom the society gives, then why not? There are people who can stand up for themselves and they should not be discouraged. I was sixteen years old when I filed a FIR against an assault on me,” says Kangana.
The actress adds that everyone does not need empowerment. “There are women who need to be empowered and they should be. But not all. Some women are already strong and they are givers,” adds Kangana.
Interestingly Rani Mukerji is originally the Rani of Jhansi as she was born in Jhansi.
