The only success this year during the IPL has been Avengers: Infinity War, which is a blockbuster because of its content and the fact that it is a much-anticipated franchise. While other films like Nanu Ki Jaanu, October, Beyond the Clouds and Mercury have fallen by the wayside, the makers of 102 Not Out and Raazi can take heart from the fact that this film has done well.

Avengers 2 opened at Rs 31 crore on release day, followed by Rs 30.50 crore on Saturday. The first Sunday at the box office netted Rs 32.50 crore and Monday did a record Rs 20.52 crore. Tuesday’s collections are also expected to be good, as it was a holiday in Maharashtra for Maharashtra Day and in the rest of the country for International Labour Day. The film released in India in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu and grossed over Rs 114 crore till Monday night.

With this box office figure, Avengers 2 is currently at No. 2 in the all-time grossers for Hollywood movies in India. The current record is being held by the 2016 release The Jungle Book which netted Rs 187.40 crore and even switched off Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan, which released with it.

“This release has come at a tough time and managed to do well. While many Bollywood stars want fancy weekends, holiday timings and festivals to help them collect money, Avengers has shown how content and expectations, aided by good marketing, can get you the numbers,” says a trade source.

Meanwhile, Avengers 2 is also the fourth Hollywood film to enter the Rs 100 crore club in India. Apart from The Jungle Book and Avengers 2, Fast and the Furious 7 netted Rs 108 crore and the fourth instalment of the Jurassic Park series – Jurassic World made Rs 101 crore.
