Hansal Mehta’s upcoming biopic on Manmohan Singh The Accidental Prime Minister looks like a promising film. Actor Anupam Kher will essay the role of the former PM. Meanwhile, it’s German actress Suzanne Bernert who will play Sonia Gandhi.

Interestingly, this isn’t Suzanne’s first time playing the matriarch of the Congress party. Suzanne acted as Sonia in a television series  Pradhamanntri, a semi-fictionalised  account of Indian politics, helmed by Shekhar Kapoor. Suzanne has also been a part of  many other Indian films in Hindi, Marathi and Bengali, as well as Indian serials. She has played Paresh Rawal’s wife in the Anees Bazmi directed 2010 comedy No Problem.

On why the makers were tight lipped about Suzanne’s role until now, a source says, “We wanted to focus on the main cast and keep the identity of the rest of the cast members away from the limelight. Suzanne was chosen because she can speak Hindi and English and has shown confidence in playing Mrs Gandhi before.”
