Films do create an awareness, says Vidya Balan
It is about time we talk about this issue and help bring a change in society: Vidya Balan
Powerhouse talent Vidya Balan, certainly knows that entertainment sells. But she is also aware about how films also contribute majorly in creating awareness. Vidya says, “Nobody wants to be preached to, so if we can convey the same message through entertainment, I believe it will be more acceptable, especially to the youth. If we try and incorporate some messages in the films we do, I think we could end up playing an important role in spreading awareness.”
Meanwhile, the Tumhari Sulu actor has extended her support to the campaign ‘Bus Ab Bahut Hogaya — Enough is Enough’ led by Farhan Akhtar’s social campaign MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination).
Ask Vidya if she feels it is disgraceful that in 2017 we are still talking about saving the girl child and gender violence and she replies, “Yes and no. We are progressing in all aspects, but our thinking needs to change. Why is it that a girl child is still a curse and a boy is a boon for some families? Why is it that in today’s world is a man paid and treated better than a woman? Why are we still so regressive and patriarchal?”
“Through this campaign, we are trying to create awareness and seek to eliminate violence against girls and women. We are telling our girls that they are equal to boys just as much as I think it’s important to teach our boys that they are equal to women too. It is about time we talk about this issue and help bring a change in society,” she added firmly.
