Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani had to spend a long time explaining to them why the characters were positioned in a certain way, and why a lot of people from Sanjay Dutt's life had to be omitted from the film.

The Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Sanju was finally given a U/A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Friday, after much trouble.

When the film was first screened for the board over a week ago, the officials were not pleased with the clean-chit given to Sanjay Dutt in it.

“The film looks like a take-off of the Munna Bhai series, in which the hero is a seemingly bad man with a heart of gold. It even has a Circuit-like character – a friend played by Vicky Kaushal, who supports him in all his endeavours. The CBFC officials were not sure how the film was a biopic. Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani had to spend a long time explaining to them why the characters were positioned in a certain way, and why a lot of people from Sanjay Dutt’s life had to be omitted from the film. It took a lot of convincing and over a week for Sanju to be granted a certificate,” a source reveals.
