My mother is my hero, says Vivek Oberoi
My mother's teachings were instrumental in making me want to make a difference in society: Vivek Oberoi
“I remember when I had earned from my first film Company, my mother told me that if at all you want to gift me something, then help the needy. Extend your support to those who are looking for aid. Always believe in giving more than taking. And this stayed with me over the years, and soon it became an intrinsic part of who I am,” says Vivek Oberoi.
Talking about the terrible tsunami tragedy that struck the country in 2004, Vivek shares his experience. “I remember food was being thrown from the trucks to the people, who until a day ago were self-sufficient. We tried cooking food to feed the masses but soon ran out of supplies. I was feeling so helpless that all I could do was pray for a miracle. And it came in the form of food trucks from around the country. That day I was convinced that when you try to help people without a selfish motto, the heavens extend their help as well.”
Vivek attributes his philanthropic nature to his mother. “My mother’s teachings were instrumental in making me want to make a difference in society. I started a school that provided free education for girls from different economic backgrounds. We have had some girls rescued from brothels who have joined the school as well. Presently, we have about four such schools in operation. My mother is an integral part of these institutions and often mentors the young students,” he adds. Vivek has not forgotten the treatment Bollywood meted out to him. “It was a difficult phase as I was subjected to lobbying, but I hung in there. Today, I only believe in giving back to the society and hence, I try to bring about smiles. We all need to do our bit,” he concludes.
Vivek plays the lead role in the web series, Inside Edge alongside Richa Chaddha.
