The actions of Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar following the volte-face by the Shiv Sena has led him into thinking again on what could be his next project.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta has made political statements with some of his films, namely Omerta, Shahid and Aligarh as director and his work as a creative producer on The Accidental Prime Minister.

And recently, the Simran director was working on a script on the Emergency for a while, involving a lot of research. But then the director made an emergency landing with his script following the high-octave action in Maharashtra politics. The actions of Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar following the volte-face by the Shiv Sena has led him into thinking again on what could be his next project.

“I have been working on a film about the Emergency. Shifting to a film on this Maharashtra soap opera. It’s darker. What Mrs Gandhi did to our democracy feels too tame compared to how democracy is being destroyed (putting it mildly) by all the players of the Maharashtra imbroglio,” Mehta wrote on social media.

Hansal is perhaps not alone. “There are other filmmakers who have taken an active interest in developing films on what is happening in Maharashtra. Even Ram Gopal Varma has been now toying with an idea ever since the media as well as the social media got talking about his three earlier instalments of Sarkar and wondered if the fourth was in the offing,” says a trade source.
