Konkana Sen Sharma never hesitates to voice her opinion. The actress, who turned a director last year with A Death In The Gunj says, that there should be at least 50 per cent women directors in the industry.

She believes that female directors can change the portrayal of women in cinema: “I feel, there should be at least 50 per cent women directors in the industry. May be some will say stories which narrate a female experience; some may not. But, they need to be there to say the stories with their own vision. In filmmaking, there are only few departments where women work. Women representation in areas like sound engineering, camera, cinematography seems to be increasing but they still remain a minority.”

The actress further explains that it doesn’t help that the industry is willing to acknowledge gender bias. She says, “I can’t speak on behalf of the industry but it doesn’t seem very likely. The budget of a film is decided by how big your male star is, whether there is an A-lister in the movie. The budgets revolve around the male actors.” She adds, “Female actors are paid less than their male counterparts and this is an accepted system. No one is willing to acknowledge this bias,” she added while talking to OXFAM India.
