Devi 2 movie review: A lacklustre horror comedy
Tamannah and Prabu Deva have made an earnest effort.
Direction: Vijay
Cast: Prabhu Deva, Tamannah, Kovai Sarala, Nandita
When director Vijay known for his emotionally charged themes picked up a horror comedy genre with Devi in 2016, it quite surprised everyone. However, the film was decently packaged with commercial elements with Tamannah’s dual role and Prabhu Deva’s alluring ‘Chal Maar’ dance, and these helped the movie tick along. But its sequel Devi 2, with the same lead pair without a proper story and imagination lacks the punch. Instead of one ghost ‘Ruby’ that possesses Tammu in Devi, here it’s a role reversal with two spirits that haunts Prabhu Deva’s body.
Set in Mauritius, Krishna (Prabhu Deva) is possessed by two ghosts Alex and Ranga Reddy (both played by Prabhu Deva). Though his naïve wife Devi (Tamannaah) is confused with what’s happening around her, soon she realizes something wrong with her husband. She meets a lawyer (Kovai Sarala) and takes her help to deal with the situation. Accordingly, Devi signs an agreement with the ghosts and the latter promises to leave Krishna’s body once their unfulfilled wishes come true. Did she succeed?
Tamannah and Prabu Deva have made an earnest effort. Kovai Sarala is repetitive. Nandita and Dimple have nothing much to do except to walk around Mauritius all the time. Neither of the cameos from Sonu Sood and RJ Balaji add anything to the story. The first half to some extent is tolerable. Composer Sam CS’ music has nothing much to offer. The problem with Devi 2 is a weak writing combined with slipshod treatment that makes for an average watch.
