Uruguayan footballer Diego Forlan, marquee player for Mumbai City FC in the ISL, is part of a unique legacy; three generations of his family have won the Copa America, his grandfather, father and followed by the man himself in 2011.

“It was a great feeling when I won the Copa America. I think it is the only family around the world to have three generations who have won an international tournament. It is a wonderful achievement by the family,” said the 37-year-old.

Considered the greatest Uruguayan footballer to have played the beautiful game, Forlan said the best manager he has had was his father.

“I have had really good managers in my career but the best I looked up to is my father. He used to play, he used to coach and he is always talking about football. I still learn so much from him,” he added. Forlan, who enjoyed many a memorable moment alongside Barcelona striker Luis Suarez, said he always knew that the latter was destined for great heights.

“I knew he was going to be a really good player. He is playing with the best in the world and there is a lot of room for him to improve,” said the 2010 Golden Ball winner.

The Uruguayan during the early part of his career played for Manchester United, a club he holds close to his heart. Forlan said henceforth things should go upward for the English club under new boss Jose Mourinho.

“Sir Alex Ferguson and some of the good players left at the same time which was a huge blow to the club. It takes time for the club to rebuild,” said Forlan.

The striker already has plans for what he would be doing once he retires from professional football.

“I’m starting to coach and will take up management. Once I retire I would like to do something related to the sport,” added Forlan.

Having had a professional career which has spanned over two decades, Forlan has been around the world playing at different leagues before making it to the ISL.

“It was a good offer and good a league. I heard it was improving and I have watched some of the matches earlier which made me want to come here. The quality is great as you have some foreign players who are here willing to teach the Indians.”
