“Distracted walking” has been cited as a growing problem across the globe as we just can’t seem to put our phones down.

While you may have found yourself bumping into things and/or people more often as you are unable to peel your eyes off your little blue screen, experts note the problem could actually be fatal.

In fact, as Mashable notes, pedestrian deaths in the US are on the rise. Eleven per cent of all fatalities in 2005 involved pedestrians, but that number rose to 15 per cent in 2014.

While a pending bill in Hawaii aims to fine those caught crossing the street while using their phone $250, a New Jersey Assemblywoman wants to make texting while walking completely illegal. The measure proposed by Pamela Lampitt would see a total ban on walking while texting and bar pedestrians on public roads from using communication devices unless they are hands-free.

Those in violation of the law would face fines of up to $50, 15 days imprisonment or both.

She said: “Distracted pedestrians, like distracted drivers, present a potential danger to themselves and drivers on the road. An individual crossing the road distracted by their smartphone presents just as much danger to motorists as someone jaywalking and should be held, at minimum, to the same penalty.”
