Dress code soon in UP madrasas
The state government hinted that it might fund the new dresses whose design would be finalised soon.
Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to introduce a dress code for students in over 16,000 madrasas after holding consultations with all stakeholders. Till now, students in madrasas have been wearing kurta-pyjamas.
The state government hinted that it might fund the new dresses whose design would be finalised soon.
Minister of minority affairs Mohsin Raza said, “We will make sure that we take into consideration opinion of all stakeholders before deciding on what the dress code would be. It will be such that the children feel that they are being brought into the mainstream.” “Till now, students in madrasas have been wearing kurta-payjamas, but now this dress code will make it more formal. We might also try to meet the expenses,” he said. The proposal on the new dress code comes close to the Yogi government introducing modern education in madrasas.
In 2017, the state government had cleared a proposal to include National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books in the syllabus of madrasas. As per the proposal of the state government, mathematics and science subjects were included in the curriculum. Both the moves have been seen as a way to bring the madrasas, which prescribe their own syllabus and specialise in imparting religious education, on a par with public and private schools. According to official figures, 16,461 madrasas are functioning in the state, including 560 government-aided and 8,171 attached to the madrasa modernisation scheme.
