Tension in Bhubaneswar after flyover falls, 1 dead
Residents block road, demand arrest of contractor.
Bhubaneswar: Tension prevailed in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar on Friday following death of a construction worker when a portion of an under-construction flyover here at Bomikhal caved in late on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Ajay Vumicha (38) of Sundergarh district.
The injured person, identified as Anand Kumar Nayak, has been admitted to AMRI Hospital in the city.
Following the accident, the local citizens resorted to road blockade and demanded arrest of the contractor.
The locals complained that because of the laxity of the contractor Pratap Panda, the chief of Pand Infra firm that is executing the project, accidents were occurring at regular intervals.
On September 10, a businessman named Satyabrata Patnaik was killed when a portion of bridge collapsed on him. He was returning home on bike after picking his daughter from her dance class.
Following the public pressure, the police on Friday arrested the contractor Pratap Panda. He was booked under Sections 304, 337, 338 and 34 of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Panda was later taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on health grounds after he produced documents pertaining to his kidney operation.
He is currently on bail as he was arrested in connection with the previous accident case.
