Patna: The state government is facing the heat from the united opposition in Bihar on the issue of Muzaffarpur shelter home case where 35 minor girls were brutally raped by officials and employees of the facility.

A day after CBI informed the Supreme Court that a bundle of bones was recovered from a location which may be of the girls allegedly murdered and buried by the accused, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav urged the governor to dismiss the Bihar government led by chief minister Nitish Kumar.

“Fresh evidence has surfaced which clearly indicates that people close to chief minister Nitish Kumar could be involved in the heinous crime. We have urged the governor to dismiss the state government immediately,” the RJD leader said while campaigning for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls on Saturday.

He added that his party would continue to raise the issue during its poll campaign for the sixth and seventh phases in Bihar.

“CBI’s submission before the Supreme Court has exposed Nitish Kumar and its government. Who doesn’t know about the main accused Brajesh Thakur and his association with political leaders of the ruling party including the Chief Minister”, Tejashwi Yadav said.

Social welfare minister Manju Verma had to resign in August 2018 after the call data record (CDR) of her husband Chandeshwar Verma revealed that he spoke with the main accused Brajesh Thakur 17 times between January and May.

Brajesh Thakur one of the main accused in the Muzaffarpur shelter home case was arrested along with other accused in June last year. The CBI had earlier seized several documents from the shelter home premises and social welfare department officials.

Muzaffarpur shelter home incident was perhaps the first case in the state where brutal mass rape of underage girls took place under one roof. Reports suggest that almost all the victims who were living in the state government’s shelter home which was being run by an NGO Sewa Sankalp Evam Vikash Samiti were either rescued from the human trafficking net of separated from their homes.

The matter surfaced in March 2018 when Mumbai based Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) had found sexual assault victims in Muzaffarpur shelter home. An audit report was also submitted to the social welfare department by the institute following which authorities registered an FIR and rescued the girls from the shelter home.
