Medical student jumps to death over stress of exam

The officials are investigating the incident based on a suicide note that has been found from the spot.

Mumbai: A 27-year-old student of medicine who is the daughter of a known skin specialist flung herself to death from a multi-storey building in Thane Saturday morning. She was allegedly stressed over her upcoming exams. The officials are investigating the incident based on a suicide note that has been found from the spot, stating the reason she took the extreme step.

The deceased was identified as Shramista Sufal Som, who was preparing for the NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, Post Graduate) exam, which is the entrance exam for the MD course.

Shramista was found dead in the premises of Everest Society compound Saturday morning. The Kapurbavdi police, who is investigating the case, said that the deceased stayed on the 12th floor of Glory building in the society.

The incident took place around 7am after Sharmista flung herself to death.

The officials said that the note seemed to have been written on the intervening night following which, she took the drastic step. The incident came to light after the locals heard a loud thud and rushed to the spot.

She was then rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival, the officials said. “We have registered a case of accidental death,” said Sukhada Narkar, Thane police spokeswoman.

The Preliminary probe has revealed that she could have been pressured to crack the exams in a bid to establish herself as a doctor like her mother. The suicide note stated that she was unable to study for the upcoming entrance exam.

The police has sent the body for conducting an autopsy and will record the statements of the family members to ascertain facts and the sequence of incidents over the past few days. The police will also speak to the neighbours and locals as part of the investigation.
