Army jawan killed, two others injured in Pak artillery fire along LoC

SRINAGAR: An Army jawan was killed and two others were injured in cross-boder firing in Jammu and Kashmir's northwestern Kupwara districts on Saturday.
Defence spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia, said here that Pakistani troops "initiated an unprovoked ceasefireeasefire violation" along the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam sector of Kupwara by firing mortars and other weapons resulting in on-the-soit killing of one Indian Army soldier and injuring two others .
"They were evacuated to the 92-Base Hospital in Srinagar's Badami Bagh Cantonment and their condition is stable", the spokesman said.
He added that "befitting response" was given to the Pakistani artillery firing. It was not immediately known if there were any casualties on the Pakistani side of the de facto border as well.
Though the Army refused to divulge the name of the slain soldier maintaining that as per the practice his family will have to be informed first, the police sources identified him as Bopender Singh and those injured as Lance Naik Venkatesh and Sepoy Shajal.
Earlier this week, two Army soldiers were killed in separate sniper attacks reportedly from across the LoC in J&K's Rajouri district.
