Lucknow: National Commission for Women chairperson Rekha Sharma has said that outside elements aggravated the situation in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus on September 23, which led to violence.

Ms Sharma told reporters on Friday that a few boys, who were not BHU students, were found to be staying illegally in hostels. “I have asked the authorities to identify them and get them ousted. Legal action should also be taken against them”, she said on Friday.

She further said that she had asked the girls to identify the troublemakers and hand over their list to the SSP for further action.

The NCW chairperson said that special high-tech security cameras would be installed on the campus and she had asked the SSP to deploy force on the campus for a few more days.

“We found that eve-teasing was rampant on the campus and we have asked the commissioner to ensure steps for sensitisation of the local people”, she added.

Regarding curfew timings, Ms Sharma said that same timings would soon be announced for both, girls and boys.

She also said that the vice-chancellor G.C. Tripathi has neither met her nor has he responded to her calls.

“He will now be summoned to Delhi because it is evident that he did not play his part in controlling the situation”, she added.
