DHFL scam: CBI seeks papers on PPF funds

Following the ED probe, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had even imposed restrictions on withdrawal for money from the company.

The CBI raid comes a year after the Enforcement Directorate carried out searches at two locations of Amnesty International India in Bengaluru for allegedly bypassing the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act after they were denied permission by the home ministry.

New Delhi: The CBI has sought documents pertaining to the alleged investment of provident fund contribution of the Uttar Pradesh government employees in the scam-hit Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL) from the power department of the state government.

Sources said the agency will soon register a preliminary enquiry (PE) to probe the investment of the provident fund contributions of government employees in the DHFL by the power department in UP. “Immediately after receiving relevant documents from the state government, the CBI will register a PE to probe the matter”, sources said. The UP government recently recommended CBI probe into the matter.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath last week transferred to the CBI the ongoing probe into the investment of UP power corporation’s employees provident fund money in scam-hit DHFL. The issue sparked a major controversy, especially since DHFL’s promoters were recently grilled by the Enforcement Direc-torate (ED) over their alleged links with a front company owned by Iqbal Mirchi, a former aide of gangster and drug dealer Dawood Ibrahim.

Following the ED probe, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had even imposed restrictions on withdrawal for money from the company.

“The issue of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) investment in DHFL is serious. Strict action will be taken against whoever is guilty. All the personnel of UPPCL are members of my family, the government will ensure that no one is hurt,” State Power Minister Shrikant Sharma had said in a tweet. Two persons were arrested later on Saturday in connection with the case and an FIR was registered at Lucknow’s Hazratganj police station. While one of the accused was identified as PK Gupta and arrested from Agra, the other arrested, Sudhanshu Trivedi, was held from Lucknow.
