Over 7 lakh first time voters in Assam

Guwahati: More than seven lakh first time voters are expected to exercise their franchise in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections in Assam.
Informing that commission was taking various steps to ensure that these new first time voters come out to exercise their franchise, the chief electoral officer Mr Mukesh Sahu said, “We have enrolled 7,06,489 first-time voters in summary revision of the electoral roll which recorded the presence of 2,17, 60, 604 electors on January 1 this year in Assam.” The 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam will go to the polls in three phases — April 11, 18 and 23. “Out of the first-time voters, 4,04,715 are men and 3,01,774 women. The final numbers may vary as the list is being updated. All of them are within the age group of 18 to 19 years,” said Mr Sahu, He added that multiple number of awareness campaigns have been launched. In addition, some 503 voters, marked under the third gender, will also exercise their franchise in Assam in the forthcoming elections, said Mr Sahu.
