Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a skill development training to cover two crore women under the 'Lakhpati Didi' scheme that aims to encourage them to start micro-enterprises.

“It is my dream to make two crore lakhpati didis in villages,” the Prime Minister said in his Independence Day speech.

“When you go to a village, you will find ‘bankwali didi, anganwadi didi and dawai-wali (medicine) didi. It is my dream to make two crore lakhpati didis in villages,” he said.

A senior official giving details said the scheme was in place in some states and the Centre intended to extend it to two crore women across the nation. Women would be trained in skills like plumbing, LED  bulb-making and operating and repairing drones among others. Modi noted now more than before women were science subjects.
