New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a contempt of court petition against Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Basal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal for making statements in violation of the apex court order on sharing river waters with neighbouring states.

A Bench of  Chief Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud told the counsel who mentioned the petition for urgent listing that the matter would be heard in due course. The contempt petition has been filed by Rohtak-based NGO Two plus five Mudhe Jan Andolan. It said that despite the ruling both the CM and dy CM were asserting that Punjab would not release even a drop of water for other states and this amounted to committing contempt of court.
