UP: Man tries to set woman on fire over sexual harassment complaint

Muzaffarnagar (UP): A 30-year-old man allegedly tried to kill a woman by setting her on fire at Mujheda Sadat village in the district after she refused to withdraw a case of sexual harassment against him.

The accused Shamshad had been lodged in jail in connection with the month-old case and recently came out on bail, SHO K P Singh said.

He had been pressurising the 25-year-old to withdraw her complaint but she refused to relent, he said.

The woman claimed in her complaint that Shamshad barged into her house Tuesday and poured kerosene on her but she managed to escape before he could set her on fire, the SHO said.

The accused fled from the spot after she shouted for help. A hunt is on to nab him, Singh said.
