I&B goes to Smriti Irani, Narendra Singh Tomar gets urban development
Mr Naidu's other portfolio of urban development was given to rural development minister Narendra Singh Tomar, the PMO said.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday allocated the additional charge of the information and broadcasting ministry to Union textiles minister Smriti Irani after M. Venkaiah Naidu resigned from the Cabinet to contest the vice-presidential poll.
Mr Naidu’s other portfolio of urban development was given to rural development minister Narendra Singh Tomar, the PMO said.
In the afternoon, Irani assumed additional charge of the I&B ministry, and tweeted, “With blessings of PM @narendramodi ji, took Additional Charge of @MIB_India.”
She held a meeting with minister of state for information and broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Prasar Bharati CEO S.S. Vempati and other senior officials of the ministry. As one of the youngest ministers in the Modi Cabinet, Ms Irani had been moved to the textiles ministry from the human resource development last year. As the head of the I&B ministry, Ms Irani is expected to take charge of the government’s awareness campaigns. Coming from the television fraternity, she is considered a suitable candidate to lead the I&B ministry.
