Srinagar: A day after five of a family were killed and 12 other civilians were injured in the mortar shelling along the line of control, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti, on Monday asked New Delhi and Islamabad to show mercy on the people of the State.

Talking to reporters after visiting Balakot area in Poonch district where a 45-year-old villager Muhammad Ramzan and his four family members were killed and two others wounded in Pakistani shelling, the chief minister said, “I request both India and Pakistan to show mercy and be kind to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. I want to appeal to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and the rulers of Pakistan to stop this shelling. The two sides must respect the (November 2003) ceasefire agreement.”

She said that it were the people living on the two sides of the de facto border who bear the brunt of the active hostilities between the facing troops.

“It is the people of Jammu and Kashmir who have been at the receiving end. The Partition of the subcontinent continues to haunt the people of the State,” she said.

Taking a dig at both, she said two countries were not able to build roads and yet they were spending huge sums of money on acquiring weaponry.

The chief minister after consoling with the relatives of the five civilians handed over cheques of Rs 2.5 million as ex gratia to the next of kin of the deceased.

She also gave a cheque of Rs 300,000 each for meeting the educational expenses of deceased Ramzan’s daughters Noorain Akhtar (14) and Marin Akhtar (7) who were critically injured in the incident.

She also announced bearing of all expenses coming on their treatment.
