Patna: Nitish Kumar led NDA government facing attack over rising crime graph in Bihar was in for another setback when a businessman and BJP leader Gunjan Khemka was killed by unidentified gunmen on Thursday.

The incident occurred outside his factory in Vaishali district’s Hajipur industrial area.  Police said that the shootout was carried out by motorcycle-borne gunmen who fled from the spot after killing the BJP leader and injuring his car driver.

“The broad daylight coldblooded murder of our friend and party colleague is shocking for us. His murder is connected with the lapses and failure of local police and administration.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar must serio-usly tighten the noose of the police and administration and ensure that his killers and conspirators are severely punished”, BJP spokesperson Nikhil Anand told us.

BJP is a part of Nitish Kumar government in Bihar. The harsh statement issued by the ruling party spokesperson has aroused political temperature in the state.

The opposition RJD which has been hinting at using the “lawlessness” as an agenda during the 2019 general elections also termed the current scenario as “Maha Jungle Raj” and said, “Nitish Kumar’s good governance policy has failed. There is an atmosphere of fear in the state. Cases of murder and kidnapping have gone up in last one year”. Sources said in last one year around eight political leaders have been killed in Bihar.

Reports suggest that Mr Khemka and his wife have been receiving extortion calls from criminals for the past several weeks and complaint regarding the issue was filed at the local police station in Patna.

According to officials here, Special investigation team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the murder of Mr Khemka. ADG headquarters S.K. Singhal in a statement claimed that “used shells of 9MM pistol have been recovered from the spot and raids are being conducted in Vaishali, Patna and other adjoining districts to nab the culprits”.
