Guwahati: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Wednesday regretted that some section of people and organisations are working overtime to create confusion about National Register of Citizen (NRC) at the national as well as international level.

Asserting that such people are either against the publication of NRC or trying to protect the foreigners, the chief adviser of AASU,  Samujjal Bhattacharya, however, said that August 31 is going to be a crucial day for the future of the indigenous people of Assam as after 34 years of signing of the Assam Accord, one major step will be achieved towards identifying the foreigners living in Assam.

Contrary to what ruling BJP and Opposition have been doubting, the accuracy of the NRC, Mr Bhattacharya said, “We hope that with constant monitoring by the Supreme Court, the people will get an NRC which will not contain  names of any foreign national.”

He pointed out that the major point of the Assam Accord — detection and deportation of foreign nationals living illegally in Assam — has not been implemented even after 34 years of signing of the accord.

Justifying the publication of the NRC as a ma-jor step, he pointed that government headed by different political parties came to power in New Delhi and Dispur since the signing of the Assam Accord but no government took up the issue of infiltration from Bangladesh seriously.
