Democracy prevailed over authoritative mindset: PM Modi on emergency
Senior leaders, ministers recall their struggle to restore democracy; Mamata calls BJP's rule 'super emergency'.
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, paid homage to the revolutionaries and leaders who fought and resisted emergency imposed in 1975 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This year marks the 44th anniversary of the emergency.

BJP’s working president J P Nadda called the emergency period a “black blot” on democratic credentials of the nation.

While Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recalled the period as “darkest chapters in the history of the country”. He also urged the people to understand the importance of upholdoing the integrity of our institution.
The declaration of Emergency on June 25, 1975 and the incidents that followed, mark as one of the darkest chapters in India’s history.

Home Minister Amit Shah also took to Twitter to share his thoughts and talked about the deprivation of fundamental rights during emergency.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banjerjee, however, hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party by calling the rule of the present government as “super emergency”.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted his thoughts on emergency stating that the nation should resolve to never repeat emergency-like situation. He, however, erred in calculating the number of years.
This very day 34 years ago India witnessed one of the biggest assault on its democracy with the imposition of emergency by the then Prime Minister.

Let us resolve never to allow repetition of subversion of the Constitution of this great democracy.
India was under Emergency between June 25, 1975 and March 21, 1977. Emergency was aimed to control “internal disturbance”, for which the constitutional rights were suspended and freedom of speech and the press withdrawn.
