UP: Farmer commits suicide, couple consumes poison in separate incidents

The couple attempted suicide as the woman's parents opposed their relationship and had fixed her marriage with another man.

Muzaffarnagar: In two separate incidents, a farmer ended his life while a couple attempted suicide in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, police said on Thursday.

A 40-year-old farmer shot himself on Wednesday over a prolonged illness in the Behda Thru village in Muzaffarnagar, police said.

Sanjay was suffering from cancer and was depressed over it, they said. The police have recovered the pistol from the spot.

In another incident, a 26-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, who the police said were in a relationship, attempted suicide on Wednesday by consuming poison in Tandheda village, said SP (rural) Ajay Sehdev.

The woman's parents opposed the match and had fixed her marriage with another man, he said.

The two are in the hospital, and are under observation, he said.
