Pune: A hapless man in Pune lost his wife to roaring stream waters just as they wee about to get out of their house to safety.

The Pune flash floods have so far killed 18 people.

Tangewala colony’s Sanjay Rane lunged for his wife as the waters of the Ambil stream next to their home overflowed, but the currents pulled her away from him. Jyotsana Rane was 40 years old, HT reported.

“I could not save her or get hold of her,” he said. A shocked Rane said that his 10-year-old son would never be able to see his mother again.

His wife’s body was found nearby after the waters receded.

Pune Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao said the stream breached because of encroachments and narrowing of the Ambil Odha stream. The gushing flow was constricted and it spilled over on the banks.

The rains have caused massive damage killing more than 800 animals. Two thousand vehicles were submerged underwater in prominent areas of Pune, including Katraj, Bibwewadi, Padmavati and Sahakarnagar.
