Ooty: Elephant G. Rajendran, the Chennai-based advocate-cum-environmentalist who is the petitioner in the Segur Valley elephant corridor case, recalled Deccan Chronicle's role in over a decade in identifying the violations and issues in the corridor that eventually were helpful in filing of a public interest litigation to retrieve the corridor.

He said he is indebted to everyone who helped in retrieval of the elephant corridor. Picking up Deccan Chronicle for special praise, he recalled how the trip he made to Vibuthimalai in Bokkapuram limits along MTR boundary in 2008 with this DC correspondent that helped him get an insight into the elephant corridor in Segur valley and about the violations and constructions and defying of TNPPF-Act in the wild jumbo route that prompted him to file a PIL in the Madras high court to make the jumbo path free from encroachments.

He appreciated DC for providing necessary inputs that helped in identifying fresh obstructions in the jumbo corridor. He also recalled DC's role in reining in offenders in the illegal quarry issue in 2008-09, to ban stone quarrying in the ecologically-fragile Nilgiris that eventually saw the high court banning quarries in Nilgiris.
