New Delhi: The Congress has appointed Amit Chavda, MLA, as the new Gujarat president after Bharatsinh Solanki resigned from his post. Insiders claim that Mr Solanki was miffed with the party as he was overlooked for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat. The Congress chose Mr Narainbhai Rathwa and Ms Amee Yagnik over Mr Solanki for the two seats while Mr Solanki was lobbying hard for a Rajya Sabha berth from his home state. He had expressed his desire in this connection to senior leaders close to the party high command.

Forty-two-year-old Mr Chavda happens to be the first cousin of Bharatsinh Solanki. He represented the Anklav constituency in Anand district of the state in 2012 and 2017. Earlier, he won the Borsad assembly constituency twice. Chavda met the Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday and thanked him for the new role.
