Governor reshuffle on the cards soon?

New Delhi: After the recent Cabinet rejig, speculation is rife that the NDA government is now contemplating to initiate steps to reshuffle some governors and may also appoint a few new ones.

Some governors have held additional charge of other states for more than a year.

“The Centre will soon finalise the list of BJP veterans to be appointed as Governors to fill up vacancies in various Raj Bhawans”, sources said adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Rajnath Singh and other top leaders will soon discuss the issue and shortlist the names.

Sources further said, “West Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi is already holding additional charge of Bihar. Gujarat governor Om Prakash Kohli is holding additional charge of Madhya Pradesh. Kohli was given the additional responsibility after Ram Naresh Yadav’s tenure ended on September 7 last year”.

Madhya Pradesh Congress recently demanded a full-time governor in the state.

Besides, Nagaland governor, P. B. Acharya, is holding additional charge as governor of Arunachal Pradesh. Some of the other states being considered by the government for fresh faces in Raj Bhavan include Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and even certain southern states.

One of the important names doing the rounds is that of Najeeb Jung, former lieutenant governor of Delhi, who is being considered for a southern state.

Sources further said Rajasthan governor Kalyan Singh may be moved to another crucial state in north India.

The name of former Delhi police chief, B.S. Bassi, is also under consideration for the governorship of Madhya Pradesh.

The government is also considering on appointing noted lawyer and former attorney-general Soli Sorabjee as governor of an important state.
