Patna: The prestige of ruling JD(U) and Opposition RJD is at stake in Jokihat Assembly constituency where byelections were held on Monday.

Sources claim that the voting percentage went down by 10 per cent in comparison to 2015 Assembly elections. According to reports, around 53 per cent voting was recorded on Monday.

There are also reports of a boycott of polling by voters in several villages and malfunctioning of EVMs at several booths.

Jokihat Assembly seat is a part of Araria Lok Sabha constituency which has been the stronghold of former RJD MP Mohammad Taslimuddin who passed away last year.

Taslimuddin’s son Sarfaraz Alam was the JD(U) MLA from Jokihat but vacated the seat in March to contest parliamentary byelections from Araria Lok Sabha constituency on RJD ticket. The RJD this time had fielded Taslimuddin’s younger son Shahnawaz Alam while the JD(U) gave the ticket to Murshid Alam.
