Rainwater floods airport lounge

Guwahati: The passenger lounge of newly-expanded Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati was flooded when rainwater started dripping through the roof of the airport on Monday.

Though, airport authorities were tight-lipped about the incident, officials and workers said that heavy rain for little over an hour on Monday evening caused water to enter through the ceiling of the newly-made extension of the passenger lounge.

A video, shot by passengers and workers, of water gushing through the roof at the airport in Guwahati has also gone viral on social media.

Passengers travelling by evening flights claimed they were drenched by the rainwater and many of them had to move away with their luggage. However, airport official said that no equipment, including the luggage screening machines, was damaged because of the leakage of water.

Airport manager P.K. Tailong said that they have expanded the canopy recently and there were some leakage in the roof leading to self-diversion of rainwater through the air-conditioning vents, light sockets and the gaps between ceiling tiles. “I was present there and it was immediately attended,” said Mr Tailong. He however clarified that it was an ‘initial teething problem’.

The visuals of rainwater dripping through the roof, which went viral on social media, has raised many questions over the quality of work done by the contractors.

The video is being widely circulated on social media and many people ranted on Twitter, tagging ministers.
