Ex-coordinator Hajela lands in fresh trouble

Guwahati: An FIR was filed on Thursday against former NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela by the Assam Public Works (APW), an NGO, with CBI, alleging huge misappropriation of government funds in updating the NRC in the state.

Though, CBI is yet to take the cognisance and conduct any preliminary investigation, the APW in its FIR has demanded a high-level probe into the alleged misappropriation of funds  by the former NRC state-coordinator and his close aides.

The FIR, a copy of which was made available to the media, claimed that Mr Hajela had appointed several retired government officials as his advisors and they were provided with new vehicles and a handsome salary package.

There is no record of the nature of job done by the advisors and this expenditure has not been audited by the CAG, it said.

The FIR further claimed that no remuneration has been paid to the teachers who were engaged in the process of updating the NRC where as huge amount of money was said to have been spent on paying reenumeration to teachers.

The APW FIR has also alleged huge financial irregularities in purchasing of laptops, different electronic gadgets and electric generators.

In process of updating the NRC, the ministry of home affairs had released about '1,600 crore to the NRC authorities.
